First Impressions: Windows 7 Beta

Posted by Ub3rG33k on Jan 21, 2009 in Microsoft

Well, I have a spare machine, so thought I’d download the Vista 7 Beta, and see what’s in store for windows users.

Currently I’ve spent only an hour or so using it, however I thought I’d give my first impressions.

It’s quick, it’s stable and so far no crashing.

The UI is improved, however seems more and more like Mac OS

The below are just first impressions, and the resolution is possible, however not clear.

Currently don’t like to the fact that that you can’t change the control panel to classic mode.

There is no longer a quick launch toolbar (I need this in my life)

Unable to turn off UAC

I’m a little curious how it was able to access my NAS drive (which requires name/password), and have full access ?

as I’ve said, this are first impressions, and I will add posts when I’ve sussed out how to do the above.

edit: Ok, now I’ve had a little more time, I’ve now answered my questions. Instead of UAC, you now have a feature that gives you a sliding scale of how often you want Windows to annoy you, turning this to never, allows your to do what you like.

Sussed the taskbar, I had it locked…now I can drag and “pin to toolbar”

Sussed how it was able to access my NAS drive, it seems to be smart enough to use the NT/Authentication setting that I logged onto Windows 7 with, and try these…and it worked.

Finally as for the control panel, you are unable to change it to classic mode, but you can “show all control panel”, and this displays the log, however it does seem to reset when you go back in.

The playing will continue

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Vegas 2

Posted by Ub3rG33k on Jan 18, 2009 in PC Gaming

This weekend’s offer on Steam, is the full game at £7.49 (Half Price), so decided to get a copy. To be honest, I am a big fan of FPS’s (First Person Shooters), however I’m more of a UT (Unreal Tournament) type guy, who love running around with the flack cannon, and rocket launcher and turning my opponents into a mess on the floor.

I was very surprised at this game, it is very tactical, and you have the think instead of go running in with all guns blazing. I’ve only played it for a couple of hours, but thoroughly enjoyed it so far, can’t wait to go running through in co-op mode with any of my mates who has it.

The graphics do look good, the AI is pretty intelligent (apart from the odd occasion where my team mates seem to get stuck behind walls, and objects).

One thing I can’t seem to suss out is….I keep seeing achievements pop up on the screen, but have no idea where to find them, they don’t seem to be on Steam ?

If anybody know, please drop me a reply, Thanks in Advance.

Fictionshed Forum, up and running.

Posted by Ub3rG33k on Jan 18, 2009 in Fictionshed

As you may know, I’m joint owner of the “company” Fictionshed.

Myself and Tony Lunn have a number of projects we are working on together, and a couple of months ago, we decided to create an umbrella company to bring all the projects together.

The final piece in the jigsaw was to merge the forums, as we had each one for project with a handful of members and staff in each.

This weekend, I’ve finally done it, I’ve merged the forums, and things seem to be picking up nicely.

Feel free to pop in and say Hi
