Red Dwarf Forum

Red Dwarf Forum

A couple of years ago I was involved with a forum called Hairbrained, this was designed for work members at CET UK Ltd to have a laugh outside work, upload pictures etc, kinda like Facebook is used now. The site took off well, and I became a moderator. About a year after it’s launch it was overrun by spam bots and eventually everybody lost interest, and the site was decommissioned.

I’d enjoyed the mod role so decided to build my own forum, while trying to think of a name for the side, Red Dwarf came on the TV and a little dim light bulb appeared above my head and hence came the idea of Red Dwarf Forum. I had a look around the net and noticed there were only a handful of Red Dwarf forums so decided to make one bigger and better. The site is nearly 3 years old now and has over a 100 registered users and a key group of users who are on the site daily. The site has had many revisions, and has been tweaked loads of times.

The forum itself runs on PHPBB3 which is a very stable framework and very user friendly, this has given me over 3 years knowledge working with PHP and SQL.

Although I’ve done no work on the site for some time, I do administrate the site and spend most days chatting in the forum.

RDF Supergroup

RDF Supergroup

Now this was an interesting project to start and maintain. About 5 month after I’d launched Red Dwarf Forum, myself and a few other members of the forum started to play the MMORPG game, City of Villains

We created a Supergroup (kinda of a guild) called the RDF Supergroup (Red Dwarf Forum Supergroup) and went on a recruiting drive.

As we went through the game we needed somewhere to keep a tally on the stats levels and any screenshots we’d taken throughout the game. Initially I sectioned off a part of the Red Dwarf Forum, however this didn’t do what we needed to do, so decided to build it its own site.

The one gave me the kick up the arse I needed, and had to learn Photoshop and Dreamweaver. The site has multiple photo galleries, it was the first time I’d used Templates and CSS also so was a massive learning curve. Believe it or not, the first draft of the site (about 12 pages I believe) was all done without the use of Templates or CSS, you can only imagine my relief when I discovered the proper way of doing things

:This site is no longer used or maintained as we no longer play the game, however the forum has well over a 1000 member…..thanks to spam bots

The Perfect Look

The Perfect Look

This is my sisters site, and as you can probably tell by the website, she is a hairdresser that specialises in Wedding Hair. This site has been remodelled a couple of times as my experience and knowledge grown. Currently has a photo gallery, and CGI contact us page, however plan to add more to it in the future, currently looking at embedding a database into the background and run a calendar from this.

This site is just ticking over at the moment, and gets updated every couple of weeks with new images.

The site can be found at www.theperfectlook.co.uk

The Oolites

The Oolites

Now first of all, I don’t want to take any of the glory for this site, however I have worked on it in the background, and it’s been a large learning curve.

A colleague of mine is the bass player in the band The Oolites and wanted to take his band to the next level and away from Myspace. He had many good ideas but was unsure of how to get them onto a website.

Although 90% of the work has been done by Simon, I’ve been on the other end of the phone/email/messenger for him. The site is still a living site, and each page presents a new challenge and forces us both to go and learn.

From this site I’ve got a better understanding of CGI scripting as well as JavaScript.

Battlestar Tales: ViPs

ViPs

A couple of years ago I was made aware of an online machinima sensation sweeping through the web. I was lucky enough to catch it after only 4 episodes and I’ve been hooked since. The series is called Red Vs Blue and is basically shot using in game footage from the Halo engine. In the early days this was done with a couple of Xbox’s and Halo 1. Five years on, they are now using Halo 3, have a worldwide following and are sponsored by both Microsoft and Bungie.

Anyway, that’s where the inspiration came from no let me tell you about ViPs. Myself and a good friend of mine Tony Lunn are both huge fans of Red Vs Blue and most things Sci-Fi. I was approached by Tony a good few months ago and asked if I wanted to be part of the project, and obviously I said yes.

We spent many days coming up with ideas, scripts and which gaming engines we could use to give us what we wanted, and finally settled with a custom version of Freespace 2 call Beyond the Red Line.

Currently we have 2 episodes complete and scripts and test footage already shot for another 2. At the moment we have a story arc for 10 episodes, however once the story does get going, I’m sure they’ll be many more.

Guildies

Guildies

This is machinima project number 2. As you can probably tell from the font and logo, this is a project using the World Of Warcraft engine. Guildies is loosely based on friends and plans to have a similar feel to it. This project is slightly bigger that ViPs as it has 6 independent characters instead of just the 2 in ViPs. However, this has slowed things down though, as getting 6 people together to discuss plotlines and scripts is hard work.

After much pain and suffering running 2 machinima projects with work and beer getting in the way, we decided to start a 3rd…..I know !
This was is purely audio and up on Itunes. The homepage is <a href=”http://www.novo-b.com/” target=”_blank”>Novo-b.com</a>.

This is based on the popular Sci-Fi series of Babylon 5, if your a fan, fee free to check out the podcast.

After much collaboration with Tony, it seemed only right to put all the projects under 1 name, so after much googling, and searching on available .co.uk and .com domain names, we finally came up with <a href=”http://fictionshed.com/” target=”_blank”>FictionShed</a>.

The current state of play is, we have the audio track done for the first episode, and are trying to co-ordinate to get the first episode shot.

There is a lot of work going on in the background on the website, which will be made live once the first episode is complete.

Update 08/12/2008 – Episode 1 has just been released on Itunes as an audio only podcast. Will post the link as soon as it’s available, guess I’d better get to work on the site :S
